Sarah Roberts is the Senior Vice President for economic development with the Greater Waco Chamber. She is hoping the research center will help give Waco an extra boost. Canadian software firm opens U.S. headquarters in Austin [Statesman.com]
COMPILED FROM STAFF REPORTS - Tuesday, July 14, 2009
Absolute Software Corp., which makes computer security software, has begun operations in North Austin, which is its new U.S. headquarters.  The Canadian company makes software that assists in computer data protection, computer asset management and computer theft recovery.  The company employs 32 people in Austin and expects to double in size locally in the next two years, according to the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce.   The Austin office is home to part of the company's sales team and to its consumer business operations.  The company works with a wide variety of customers, including the Austin school district, to keep track of equipment and to help recover stolen computers.  The Vancouver-based company had sales of $38.9 million for the nine months ended March 31.    Read the rest of the from the link above.

Austin leads nation in job growth for 4th straight month [Statesman.com]

For 4th straight month, Austin [was the] sole major U.S. city to grow jobs Austin was the only major city in the country, and one of few overall, to increase jobs in May, the fourth month in a row it has won that distinction, according to a Labor Department report.  Of the 38 largest cities that the department tracks, only Austin had more jobs in May than a year earlier. The Central Texas job growth rate was 0.5 percent.  Only 15 cities of all sizes increased jobs in that period, and 295 had job losses.  All metro areas had higher unemployment rates in May than they did in May 2008.    Read the rest of the from the link above.

Austin area job growth holds up [Statesman.com]

The Austin area continued to add jobs in May, the only large Texas metropolitan area that has done so for the fourth month in a row.  The Austin-Round Rock area gained jobs at a 0.5 percent rate last month compared to a year earlier, the Texas Workforce Commission reported. Report: Austin economy is stabilizing and 'on the mend' [Statesman.com]

The Austin-area economy has stopped declining and might be ready for a gradual recovery in the next year, according to a new report from economists at Wells Fargo. "The Austin economy is already on the mend, or at least has not continued to fall," Wells Fargo Economics Group senior economist Eugenio Alemán wrote in the report. Once again, Austin leads U.S. in big-city job growth [Statesman.com]

DMX adding Austin jobs as it readies for new headquarters [Statesman.com]
Austin-based DMX Inc. is adding jobs in Austin as it gets ready to move into new headquarters.  The company, which provides digital music and piped-in scents for stores, hotels and other venues, will add as many as 85 jobs in the coming months, bringing its Austin employment to about 200.   [Registration with the Austin American-Statesman may be required].
