10 Steps to Finding a Great Internship
- Re-visit a career counselor in Career Services to follow up on your progress in your internship search.
- Check with your academic advisor about the procedures for doing an internship for academic credit.
- Research internship resources in Career Services, LBJSC, Suite 5-7.1.
- Continue to use the Jobs4Cats database to locate internship postings or to view new opportunities.
- If you decide to complete the internship for academic credit, you will need to meet with your faculty internship advisor to complete the necessary forms required by each department. Remember, you must add the internship class to your class schedule and pay the course fees in order to obtain credit.
- Develop a resume highlighting your skills and work experience. Be sure to include any volunteer work you have done. Follow-up each cover letter and resume with a phone call if the employer does not contact you within a reasonable amount of time. Career Services has many examples that can help you prepare your cover letter and resume. You can also schedule an appointment with a career counselor to have them critique it.
- Prepare for interviewing. Do a mock interview in Career Services.
- Present a professional image when interviewing. Attend an “Etiquette Dinner or Networking Reception” to learn how to be comfortable in this kind of environment.
- A decision will need to be made on where and when you would like to complete the internship. If you have contacts in the business field you are interested in, contact that person to see if an internship is a possibility.
- After landing an internship, write a thank you note to the employer to thank them for the opportunity they have given you!
