Get Involved In the Job Hunting process

Get Involved in the Job Hunting Process

v  Network, network, and network: Don’t hesitate to tell everyone around you that
you’re looking for a job! People would love to forward information from their resources
to help you get a job. It would also be great to have your American friends review your
documents for you. Utilize every resource you have around you,
including Career Services!

v  Be active, be assertive: Contact your future employers before they reach you
either via email or via phone. They may notice your accent as a non-native speaker;
however, they will be more impressed by your confidence, ambition, and motivation!!!

v  Be prepared; take it as a full-time job: It’s never easy to find an ideal job, even
for Americans themselves. So take your time to plan ahead and pay close attention
during the job hunting process. You can choose either to send out thousands of the
same format of resumes at the same time, or individualize and follow up with each one
of them. The better you prepare, the more opportunities/and higher success rates you
have to find a job!

v  Market Yourself Positively: It is very important for international students to turn
employers' objections into positives. By virtue of living and studying abroad,
international students demonstrate tenacity and resourcefulness. Tell employers
about the challenges faced in studying overseas and how you overcame them.
International students should be prepared to tell employers how hiring them offers
more advantages than disadvantages.

v  Be Flexible: International students may need to expand their job search by
considering jobs outside their desired career. For example, an Information Technology
major who would like to do web development may want to search for jobs in web
development and other areas of information technology.

v  Patience and Persistence: Although finding employment as an international
student can be challenging, it is not impossible. Each year the U.S. grants almost
200,000 H1-B visas.
