Career Exploration and Counseling


Career Counseling

•  Individual Career Counseling - call 512.245.2645.
Students are encouraged to discuss their choice of major, as well as related career plans, with the counseling staff of Career Services.  Appointments for these services are recommended at least 2 - 3 days in advance.  Our professional staff is also available to review resumes and cover letters.

Walk-In Career Counseling

Walk-In career coaching hours are held in the Career services office on the 5th floor of the LBJ Student Center. Students do not need to schedule an appointment and may come in during our scheduled hours for 30 minute appointments.

Monday and Tuesdays - 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Wednesdays and Thursdays - 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.


Free Assessment Inventories

Career assessments can help students understand their skills, interests, personality traits, work values, and how these relate to majors and jobs.  If you are interested in an assessment, contact Career Services at 512.245.2645, and counselors can assist you with the assessment process.

Holland Occupational Themes 100 items; about 60 minutes Interest, Career  Based on the theory of John Holland, Ph.D., people with the same or similar interest are often found in the same work environments.  To discover the work environments suited to your interests, abilities and personality consider the Holland categories/themes.

 Jung Typology Test

 72 items; about 25 minutes  Personality  This test is based on the Jung-Meyer-Briggs typological approach to personality.  It is similar to the MBTI, one of the most widely used personality-typing instruments presently in use.  According to the typology, all people ca be classified using four criteria.

 


Fee-based Assessment Inventories

Due to the nature of these assessments, student and alumni must pay and get access in person at Career Services, LBJ Student Center 5-7.1. 

  • The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) is a forced-choice personality inventory, based on C.G. Jung's theory of Psychological Types.  Its purpose is to make this comprehensive theory of personality practical and useful in people's lives. 
  • The Strong Interest Inventory® will provide individuals with information about themselves and their relationship to the working world, information that can lead to greater self-understanding and better decisions about the course of their lives.
  • The Self-Directed Search can help with career decisions, wherever a person is in life.  It has been used by more than 29 million people worldwide and has been translated into more than 25 different languages.  SDS results have been supported by more than 500 research studies.
