Central Texas job market holds up
Central Texas' job market is holding up, even as the national picture deteriorates. The region grew jobs at a 2.9 percent rate last month, on track with recent performance, according to the Texas Workforce Commission. On a national level, employers are cutting jobs, with more layoffs likely as big banks and manufacturers slash their work forces. Fort Sam Houston will see more than 12,000 Army, civilian workers
San Antonio and Fort Sam were big winners in the latest round of base realignment and closure decisions three years ago. As many as 12,400 new military and civilian workers mean an influx of at least 2,500 spouses and 2,500 school-age children.

Unemployment Rate Hits 4.1 Percent Record Low
AUSTIN — The February statewide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased to 4.1 percent, down from 4.3 percent in January and 4.5 percent in February 2007, reflecting lows not seen since the mid-1970s. The 4.1 percent February unemployment rate in Texas remains significantly below the U.S. unemployment rate of 4.8 percent.

Texas Employers Add 28,000 Jobs in January
AUSTIN — Texas seasonally adjusted nonagricultural employment grew by 28,000 jobs in January. Texas employers now have added 277,200 jobs over the past 12 months, for an annual job growth rate of 2.7 percent.
